	Performing arts institutions with common ecological and social concerns&#38;nbsp; - Bunker and Mladi Levi Festival (Slovenia), Culturgest (Portugal), Festival d’Avignon (France), Tangente St. Pölten – Festival für Gegenwartskultur (Austria), Temporada Alta (Spain), Zona K and Piccolo Teatro di Milano Teatro d’Europa (Italy), Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne (Switzerland) and the artistic collective Rimini Protokoll (Germany) -&#38;nbsp; gather to experiment and reflect on performing land-art,&#38;nbsp;to de-urbanise and decentralise their institutions and practices, to widen the audience, to stimulate resilient art works and formats, and to open new paths for international cooperation.

	What if performing
arts provided
a counterpoint to the privatisation
of landscapes,
a new common, a collective experience of nature based on time and attention?
	&#38;nbsp;Curators Stefan Kaegi and Caroline Barneaud conceive an artistic project in which institutions, artists, scientists, audiences, inhabitants are collectively invited to approach a landscape, the green zones around cities: Shared Landscapes.
They commission European artists to create 7 pieces for meadows and forests and compose an entire day of performing land-art for the audience. Shared Landscapes will be created in Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain with local teams.
A cross-disciplinary research program combining invitations to scientists and peer-learning sessions between theatre practitioners accompany the project.

What if theatres brought people together outside of cities?
	What if art did not imitate “nature” but allow us to experience it?
	What could be the theatre's ephemeral answer to the LandArt of visual arts?

		<description>Festival d’AvignonFrance

Since 1947, the walled city Avignon in the south of France welcomes a Festival, founded by Jean Vilar. Every summer Avignon becomes an open-air forum where artists from all over the world come to share their experiences with festivalgoers. Since September 2022, the festival is directed by the Portuguese playwright and director Tiago Rodrigues, a recognised artist for its theatre that wishes to create bridges between peoples and cultures. Rodrigues proposes an interpretation of the popular theatre utopia that the Festival embodies.

	Every summer, Festival d’Avignon welcomes over 130 000 spectators for more than 300 events that take place in about 20 venues in the city and its region, from gymnasiums to cloisters, chapels to gardens, quarries to churches and since 2023, a natural space, in the outskirts of the city.

In the past years, Festival d’Avignon has been implementing sustainability measures to reduce its ecological impact. Challenging the Festival to develop and promote collaborative &#38;nbsp;
	projects in the frame of natural spaces, Performing Landscapes is a project that will help develop more tools to transform a Festival charged with history at a time when it is urgent to make a change. Performing Landscapes and its projects will help to develop other ways of welcoming artists and audiences while promoting artistic research and innovation. It will also be a motor to rethink the setting up of other venues in the entre of the city.

A territory for Shared landscapes &#124; July 2023 : Pelatier plateau, PujautShared Landscapes @ Festival d’Avignon

The village of Pujaut sits halfway between the plains and the hills, in a landscape of quarries and vineyards. Millions of years ago, the Rhône flowed through Pujaut before being diverted to the east by a tectonic uplift. Over time, geology and climate change transformed this territor into «puddles» left after glaciations and then into a pond, feeding the inhabitants of the region for centuries before being drained 400 years ago
by Carthusian monks to be cultivated. Archaeological discoveries and a agricultural vocation perpetuated by the inhabitants of the region testify to the history of this territory.

	Facing this flat immensity is a village located on a promontory, with its back to the Rhone valley and its impetuous mistral, and whose streets and alleys turn into paths and promenades. The Pelatier plateau overlooks thevillage and offers a view of the surrounding area. A long-time agricultural site, as evidenced by the mill, it was also used as a military battery to protect an airfield during World War II—which has now become a larg leisure parachuting centre. This clay, limestone and pebble plateau, where pine trees, green oaks, and broom trees line gentle slopes while vineyard spread out in the sun, is now a popular walking spot for locals.
	The map by the ALIN collective which accompanies the SharedLandscapes recreations highlights the intriguing void left by the Rhône, hiding the plains and emphasizing the hillsides and plateaux that borde it. It reminds us that the role of cartography is not only to picture presen elements but also to reveal traces of the absences and geological evolutions that have shaped territories over time.

	 Shared landscapes: creating within
the living

10 July at 5pm (in French)

The concept of “shared landscapes” invites us to think about and question our relationship to real landscapes and to the living. What does it mean to inhabit the earth, not just as a purely human stage, but as a shared landscape? What role does the landscape play in theatre?

With Frédérique Aït Touati researcher and director, Caroline Barneaud and

Stefan Kaegi curators of Paysages partagés, Clara Hédouin director of

Que ma joie demeure, Marina Ezdiari CSR manager at Audiens

Moderated by Christophe Triau of the magazine Alternatives théâtrales

With Alternatives théâtrales and Audiens, with the support of European Union

Taking care of things and landscapes. Preservation, exhibition, performance. Preserved landscapes?19 July at 11am (in French)

Things and landscapes are two fragile elements, often forgotten and under attack. Artists and researchers discuss how they take into account landscapes and objects in their work, and how doing so has become an urgent need. The discussion will focus on the convergence of struggles, preservation, and exhibitions.

With Caroline Barneaud and Stefan Kaegi curator and curator of Shared Landscapes, Vera Martynov scenographer and artist (ESAA)

		<description>Bunker -&#38;nbsp;Mladi Levi FestivalSlovenia

	Bunker is a non-profit cultural organisation that produces and presents contemporary theatre and dance performances, organises workshops and educational programmes, including the cultural education festival Drugajanje, conducts various research methods in the field of culture and organises&#38;nbsp;a renown international festival, the Mladi&#38;nbsp;Levi Festival. Since 2004, it has managed the Old Power Station, a contemporary theatre venue in Ljubljana.

	The Mladi Levi International Festival is one of Bunker's most important annual events, bringing the most current stage performers from around the world to Ljubljana in late summer every year since 1998. It stands out for its demanding artistic profile, set in the field of contemporary progressive theatre, and takes pride in its reputation for discovering young talent. The festival has a distinctive atmosphere of creativity and vibrancy, a curious audience and social commitment.
	The Mladi Levi Festival will be the framework for Performing Landscape. Rooted in the black box and the local environment, but keen to experiment with new forms and spaces, the festival will open up new dimensions of discovery of landscapes, new territories and nature through artistic practices for the artists and the audience.

A territory for Shared landscapes &#124; August 2024

Koseški boršt is an integral part of the urban forest in the Tivoli, Rožnik and Šiška Hill Landscape Park, as well as a part of the city’s cultural landscape that extends like a green wedge from the hinterland to the centre of Ljubljana. From the city centre at the Tromostovje Bridge, it is a good three kilometres air distance to Koseški boršt, and most of the way leads through the city park and forest area. In its own way, Koseški boršt is also a building block of the city's identity. Apart from the Ljubljanica River, it is the wooded slopes of the Castle Hill with its castle and the varied forest and parkland of the City Park, which acts as a protected nature and cultural heritage area, that create Ljubljana's identity to the greatest extent.

	Ljubljana's Večna pot road cut through the forest landscape of Koseški boršt a long time ago and, despite the development of activities in the surrounding area, nature has been preserved in a good condition in much of this slightly wet forest area. Over time, new paths and trails have been added to the existing ones, helping to ensure that the area remains largely open to those who wish to connect with nature in the city and to explore the attractions of the urban surroundings, such as the views of the deer grazing in the forest glades and the water and shore area of the Koseški bajer pond.
	Koseški boršt is a mixed forest, partly flat and wetland, growing on a predominantly siliceous base with acid brown soils. The tree layer is dominated by beech, oak, chestnut, sessile oak, spruce, fir and Scots pine, as well as rowan both as a tree and a shrub. The shrub layer is characterised by buckthorn and bilberry, and the herb layer is very rich. The area is home to many birds and other animals, including small carnivores, deer, foxes and badgers.

The map of Shared Landscapes focuses on Rožnik, which
dominates Ljubljana and faces towards Castle Hill and Ljubljana
Castle. The water flowing through this territory belongs to the Ljubljanica watershed, while in the north, the territor that is not visible marks the transition to the Sava watershed, one of the main tributaries of the Danube.

		<description>CulturgestPortugal

	Culturgest is the Foundation of Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), a bank owned by the Portuguese State. It functions as an international art centre situated in Lisbon, which offers a regular programme dedicated to contemporary creation - both Portuguese and international – in the fields of theatre, dance, music, cinema and the visual arts. Culturgest also has an educational programme in all of these areas, aimed at audiences of all ages and social and cultural backgrounds. Culturgest reaches a wide and diversified audience, and invests in initiatives that seek to enhance a profound relationship with the art works and projects it presents.&#38;nbsp;For a long time Culturgest has been developing a line of programming aimed at addressing pressing environmental issues, such as climate change and social transition. Indeed, a vast number of Portuguese and international artists and scientists working in the domains of ecology and sustainability have shared their work and research at Culturgest.

	&#38;nbsp;Since 2020, Culturgest is the Lead Partner of the European cooperation project ACT – Art, Climate, Transition, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

It is part of Culturgest’s mission to develop cultural activities not only at its main premises in Lisbon, but all over the country. Culturgest has been doing this for over a decade, through the organisation of exhibitions in Porto and in other main cities. In Portugal, the offer of cultural activities and events has traditionally been concentrated in the three major cities (Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra), but has slowly spread out to the other districts. Still, the rural areas have been largely left out of this development.&#38;nbsp;

	For Culturgest, Performing Landscape will be an extended exercise on how to develop collaborative cultural projects within the rural context and is hoped to yield valuable insights for future projects.
A second point of interest is to demonstrate and investigate the strong and manifold links that exist between a large city and hits hinterland. City dwellers are easily under the impression that their city functions on its own, but in reality the opposite is true. Without the many connections with the rural areas surrounding it, a city would quickly run out of the most basic things, such as food or drinking water. Performing Landscape is meant to bring to the front some of the dynamic interactions that structure the relationship between the city and the countryside.

A territory for Shared Landscapes &#124; June &#38;amp; July 2024:&#38;nbsp;Quinta do Pisão

Quinta do Pisão is a 380 ha nature park
that was redeveloped by Cascais City Council, allowing visitors a multitude of
experiences with nature and ancestral habits linked to the land. In this unique
park there is space for history, nature conservation, agricultural activity,
biodiversity preservation, art, education and environmental volunteering.

	The
main building of the farm, called Casa da Cal – Interpretation Centre,
represents the culmination of the intervention in this natural space and provides
information on the activities to be developed in the park, sanitary facilities,
a store selling farm products and a permanent exhibition alluding to natural
and historical-cultural values. Another outdoors exhibition available in the
park is called Land Art Cascais, resulting from a biennial landscape art
exhibition that is currently in its 9th edition.

Quinta do Pisão – Nature Park is
internationally considered a case study in terms of nature conservation and
biodiversity, as well as the development of responsible tourism, as a
contribution to the health and well-being of populations. Located at the
western end of the municipality of Cascais in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park,
Quinta do Pisão represents a historical-cultural legacy that has proven to be
structuring for the territory, both due to its scale, the natural values it
contains, its built heritage, and its organisation of the landscape. It is
characterized by its extremely rich mosaic of vegetation, corresponding to a
significant diversity of habitats representative of the ecology of this area.

The reference point of the Shared Landscapes Map is the level of the Rio da Mula dam, which supplies water to the municipality of Cascais. Everything below this level is visible, while anything above disappears from the map.
Shared Landscapes unfolds in&#38;nbsp;Quinta do Pisão and oscillates around this reference point.

		<description>Tangente St. Pölten
Festival für GegenwartskulturAustria

Tangente St. Pölten is a multi-disciplinary, socially inclusive, and ecologically oriented festival that takes a social-critical approach. It is targeted toward a local, regional, and international public.

The project is the follow-up to the application for the title of “Cultural Capital of Europe” and is financed in equal measure by the State of Lower Austria and the City of St. Pölten. The team is headed by Tarun Kade (Artistic Director), Angelika Schopper (Operations Director), and Stefan Mitterer (Finance Director).&#38;nbsp;

	Topics of global relevance are developed from the city and its history and made tangible. This makes Tangente St. Pölten unique. Art enables people to share surprising, formative, and long-resonating experiences together. This creates a public realm in which everyone feels invited to meet, exchange ideas, debate, and celebrate - and perhaps even to dream of other worlds together. In times of global crises, the future is increasingly observed as a threat.&#38;nbsp;
	Tangente St. Pölten is concerned with the question of how we can regain the capacity to act and be creative. This is how the visionary, imaginative, and utopian power of art finds its purpose. The goal is to achieve a programme of high artistic quality. The focus is on the visual and dramatic arts, performance, music, and literature. A variety of socio-cultural projects will mobilise the city's community. People from St. Pölten, guests from near and far, will have the experience of being involved in the festival's events.

A territory for Shared landscapes &#124; May 2024

Shared Landscapes @ Tangente St. Pölten

Embedded in the hills of the Mostviertel region, this small municipality is located south-east of the Lower Austrian provincial capital of St. Pölten.&#38;nbsp;

The forest with its many farm owners is directly adjacent to

a
regional agricultural school

 to the west. The small-scale farming ownership structure gives the territory a wonderfully varied forest landscape. High coniferous forest plots with spruces,&#38;nbsp; pines and firs are lined up next to young, species-rich reforestations, old beech stands and dense thickets full of life. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
	These diverse habitats are home to a variety of animals such as wild boar and roe deer, as well as the fire salamander typical of the region and various species of woodpecker. The forest, which is criss-crossed by small valleys and hills, is surrounded by scenic green meadows where you can enjoy sweeping views of the landscape with its many details.

A special feature of the territory is that one of Vienna's two high spring water pipelines runs through it. This pipeline can be recognised by the aisles through the forest, which are kept clear of woodland and in which the course of the pipeline is marked&#38;nbsp;
	by white painted stones. The water pipeline, built in 1910, supplies Vienna with fresh, cool water day after day. From the high plateaus of Upper Styria to the lowlands of Vienna, not a single pump is needed - only gravity carries the wonderfully fresh water to Vienna.The flysch soil is on the one hand particularly vigorous and on the other hand usually very loamy and moist. This special type of soil requires care and is easily damaged, as is the fresh grass in the surrounding meadows which serve as fodder for the local dairy farmers.
